KEOKUK COUNTY COURTHOUSE

The Keokuk County Courthouse sits in the middle of Sigourney's downtown district. Surrounded by buildings erected in the late 1800s, this neo-classical monument was dedicated in September 1910. The courthouse is three floors high with a clock tower and cupola.
Inside, the tower shaft leading to the dome is surrounded by four murals, each illustrating pieces of Keokuk County history. Painted by C. E. Rang of Chicago in 1912, the murals include scenes of: 1) a treaty being signed by the white man and Indian, 2) building the farmstead, 3) continued evolution with trains and windmills, and 4) Keokuk County in 1912 with the "modern" barn, mowed lawn, and the gasoline buggy. Rang also did the oil paintings found on the second foyer of Lydia Huntley Sigourney and Chief Keokuk.

One of the largest displays in the courthouse is that of Indian relics donated to the Keokuk County Supervisors by Jessie Hollingsworth Schipfer in 1954. The exhibit contains 1147 arrowheads, stone pottery and axes, moccassins, woven baskets, and several other pieces that depict the Indian way of life.

The Keokuk County Courthouse is open weekdays 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
