LEWIS MEMORIAL FOUNTAIN
One of the most unique attractions in Sigourney is the Lewis Memorial Fountain located on the northeast corner of the Keokuk County courtyard. The fountain was a gift from Mr. and Mrs. John Q. Lewis as a memorial to their daughter, Ethel Beatrix. The youngster often played where the fountain is now located. She died of scarlet fever in 1883. Dedicated in 1940, the Lewis Memorial consists of three pools and numerous water formations. The fountain comes alive with shades of reds, blues, and yellows dispersed throughout the evening hours during the hot summer months. In remembrance of their daughter, Mr. Lewis chose the amber lights to represent the golden hair of their beloved daughter. Weather permitting, the fountain operates from May through September. |
