The Sigourney Community School District encompasses a 70 square mile radius within the boundaries of Keokuk County. Approximately 700 students are enrolled yearly, with an average of 350 attending elementary (K6) and 350 students attending junior/senior high (7-12). The average graduating class is 50 students with 80% moving on to college.

In the last several years, the District has seen growth in the technology available for student use. Sigourney Schools have become fully computerized with Internet access and file server access in every classroom. Students also enjoy the fully networked computer labs, two at the high school and one at the elementary.

Essential Learning Goals

Students from Sigourney Community School District will:

  1. Know individual and civic responsiblities for leading lives as contributing members of the community.
  2. Possess skills to collect, analyze and organize information.
  3. Solve problems independently and cooperatively in a global and multi-cultural diverse world.
  4. Communicate effectively in a variety of ways, including writing and speaking.
  5. Utilize appropriate technology for a variety of purposes in a problem solving environment.
  6. Think and communicate creatively and critically in a variety of disciplines.
  7. Develop and maintain sound physical and mental health and pursuit of worthy leisure time activities.

SIGOURNEY PRESCHOOLS

Kids and Company was created for the primary purpose of offering quality, affordable, professional child care to all families of the area. Their staff is caring , patient and enthusiastic about the growth and potential of all children. Believing that children develop positive self-images through well planned activities which are developmentally appropriate for their age, they strive to provide a safe and happy environment for children that will contribute to their emotional, social, physical, and intellectual development.

Kids and Company's services include:
Infant care * Part-time child care * Full-time child care * Before and after school care
Summer care (through age 10) * Preschool classes

Kids and Company is licensed by the state. Staff members are trained in preschool curriculum, child development, CPR, first aid, and child abuse.

Hours are Monday - Friday 6:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

SIEDA Head Start

As a federally funded program for children and their families, SIEDA Head Start provides services for Keokuk County, as well as other counties within the area. Head Start is a comprehensive child development program focusing on all areas of a child's development: education, nutrition, physical, social and emotional.

The Head Start program operates from late August to early June. Applications are taken at anytime for children who are three or four years old by September 15.

Head Start's children services include:

Home visits * Limited transportation * Special services

Head Start's parent services include:
Home visits * Parent conferences * Parent planned activities
Social Services * Literacy services * Limited counseling
